AEO (answer engine optimisation) is the practice of structuring your content so search engines and voice assistants can lift a direct answer from it. GEO (generative engine optimisation) is the practice of making your business easy for AI tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews to find, understand and cite. Both build on good SEO, and both reward the same thing: clear, trustworthy content that answers real questions.

SEO, AEO and GEO at a glance
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank in the list of blue links | Be the direct answer shown at the top | Be named and cited inside AI generated answers |
| Where it shows up | Google and Bing results pages | Featured snippets, AI Overviews, voice assistants | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot |
| What matters most | Relevance, links, speed, usability | Answer first writing, structure, schema | Clear entities, authority, consistent facts |
You do not have to choose between them. A page that is well structured, accurate and respected tends to perform in all three.
How AI tools pick their sources
AI answer tools combine what a language model already knows with pages they retrieve from the web. When they retrieve, they favour pages that are easy to parse, that state facts plainly and that come from sources that look credible. They then summarise those pages, often with links. Nobody outside these companies can guarantee that a particular page will be cited, and the systems change often. What you can do is remove the reasons you would be skipped.
1. Write the answer first
Start each page, and each major section, with a short direct answer in plain language. Then add detail. A reader (or a machine) should be able to get the point from the first two sentences. Headings written as the questions people actually ask make this even easier.
2. Structure content so it is easy to extract
Use short paragraphs, descriptive headings, lists for steps and options, and tables for comparisons. Wall to wall text is hard to quote. A clean list of five steps is easy to quote.
3. Add an FAQ and structured data
Answer the questions customers ask before they buy, then mark them up with FAQPage schema. Add Organization, Service or LocalBusiness, Article and BreadcrumbList schema where they apply. Structured data does not guarantee a rich result, but it removes ambiguity about who you are, what you offer and what each page is about.
4. Be a clear, consistent entity
AI systems build a picture of your business from many places. Make that picture consistent.
- Use the same business name, description, address and contact details everywhere
- Publish a real About page with the names and roles of the people behind the business
- Put an author and a date on articles
- Link your website to your official profiles so they can be matched to the same entity
5. Earn mentions and links from credible sources
Authority still matters. Being referenced by respected sites in your industry and country gives both search engines and AI tools more reason to trust you. Publish useful, original material that others want to reference: practical guides, real data from your own work, clear explanations.
6. Keep the technical basics in order
- Fast, mobile friendly pages that load without errors
- A sitemap and a robots.txt file that allow search and AI crawlers to read your public pages
- Clean headings, descriptive titles and meta descriptions
- Optionally, an llms.txt file: a plain text summary of your site for AI systems. It is a young convention, not a ranking factor and not a promise of citations, but it costs little and makes your most important pages easy to find
7. Measure and test
Check your analytics for visits that come from AI tools. Once a month, ask the major assistants the questions your customers ask and note whether you are mentioned and whether the facts are right. If a fact is wrong, fix the source page and make sure the correct version is stated clearly and consistently.
What this means for your website
Most business websites were built to look good, not to be quoted. Pages are vague, answers are buried and structured data is missing. That is fixable. Our website design service builds SEO, AEO and GEO structure in from day one, including answer first copy, FAQ schema and a clean technical foundation, so your site can rank on Google and be understood by AI tools.
